This year BalaBit is again an important sponsor of the Hungarian member organization of IAESTE, as during the previous years.
The framework agreement for 2009 was concluded at the end of January: in this agreement, we provide financial and professional support for one of Hungary’s largest prominently public benefit student organisation. Since its foundation, BalaBit lays emphasis on IT training at different universities, which is not surprising since the future of developer companies (like ours) is seriously influenced by the quality of the educational system. That is why we seek for the possibilities to co-operate with these educational institutes and with other organizations performing activities in this domain.
That was the reason why three years ago we contacted the Hungarian Engineering Students’ Association, which is the Hungarian representative of IAESTE (The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) comprising 85 member countries. The community operates with the help of young volunteers and has a national network covers almost the entire Hungarian Engineering and Informatics education. The activity of the association is really widespread ranging from scholarships to abroad and professional as well as practical meetings to programs helping students find a job.
The cooperation with the Association offers us great possibility to address ourselves to students and to influence the competence of future IT technicians. That is why we provide not only financial support this year but through participating in the programs offered by the Association the cooperation has become also professional since this latter support concerns the students’ trainee programs and contributes to their scholarships. We do not only intend to influence students but we hope that we can show Hungarian enterprises an example to follow on how to assume efficient and useful social roles.

syslog-ng OSE 3.0
After the release of its commercial version last fall, syslog-ng Open Source Edition 3.0 is finally available.
The syslog-ng Open Source Edition application is a mature, stable system logging application that has become the most common alternative logging server of the Linux/Unix world. It is estimated to be used by tens of thousands of organizations on hundreds of thousands of computers, which probably makes it one of the most successful Hungarian products.
Version 3.0 contains several new features that strengthen the range of syslog-ng's functionalities. Among this is the support for the new syslog standard protocol and message format developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The application is most suitable for filtering and segmenting the incoming log messages based on their parameters and content. The new version can even separate the content of the messages to name-value pairs, and use these as macros, making it easy to process structured messages. It is also possible to rewrite and modify the messages when needed.
The syslog-ng application can directly send the log messages to SQL databases and log analyzing applications. Currently the MySQL, Microsoft SQL (MSSQL), Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQLite databases are supported.
The syslog-ng application is the ideal choice to collect logs in environments that use several different operating systems and hardware platforms, including Linux, Unix, BSD, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM AIX. The syslog-ng application is optimized for performance, and can handle enormous amount of messages. It can process up to 75,000 messages per second real-time, that is, over 24 GB raw logs per hour on entry-level server hardware.
The application can operate in server and client mode as well, and - apart from UDP - natively supports the reliable TCP and the encrypted TLS protocols.
The free syslog-ng Op[en Source Edition has extraordinary capabilities, surpassed only by the commercial syslog-ng Premium Edition that features of buffering the messages on the hard disk, storing messages in encrypted log files, reading messages from arbitrary files, and support for Microsoft Windows operating systems.

BalaBit GmbH is developing
The increasing demand for BalaBit products and the extensive partnership network made the enlargement of the German affiliate necessary.
The previous annual results of BalaBit GmbH, which coordinates the sales of the German language territory, led not only to an increasing demand but also the need to increase the number of the employees dealing with the partners’ needs. As a reaction to that, the local BalaBit team gets two new members in February.
One of them is Martin Grauel, a Pre-Sales engineer, who had previously worked for TÜV Rheinland help AG, a BalaBit partner in Germany. There, he had dealt with Zorp administration, installation and training for two years, which provided him with the possibility of getting to know BalaBit products in details.
The other newcomer is Dietmar Wilde, who, as a future Sales Manager, will contribute to the success of the sales of BalaBit solutions. This task will probably not be difficult through the already well developed channels. Dietmar had dealt with distributing Netscreen (Juniper) products, with great success. The two new colleagues are working at the BalaBit GmbH Munich office from February 1st.

BalaBit presents syslog-ng Store Box
Centralized logging helps organizations in policy compliance.
Budapest, 10. December, 2008 – BalaBit IT Security, developer of dedicated proxy-solutions for controlling network traffic as well as secure system-management solutions has introduced a major release of its syslog-ng system logging application, as well as a log server appliance called syslog-ng Store Box. The appliance – based on the new version of syslog-ng and servers from Sun Microsystems – acts as the central component of the logging infrastructure: it receives syslog and eventlog messages from servers, network devices, and applications; and stores them centrally in an encrypted and digitally signed format. That way companies can comply with regulations such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) that require the central storage of log messages about events like access to certain systems or the modification of important data files.
Syslog is a network protocol for transferring status, error, alert and other messages of servers and network devices. At the same time, syslog is also the name of the application that creates and transfers the logs of events – or stores them on the hard disk. The syslog-ng application and the syslog-ng Store Box (SSB) enable organizations to collect, process, and store syslog-messages at a central location.
Institutes and industries, like the financing sector or healthcare that are affected by such regulations can use SSB to prove the validity and integrity of their log files. Regulations like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act require for example that companies store information like the access to certain servers or the modification of certain data for a specific period.

Complete coverage in region DACH
Our already extensive international partnership network continued to extend last month when Controlware GmbH, dacoma GmbH and Head Technology joined.
Together with the recent members of our partner network, now fifteen resellers and distributors have the BalaBit solutions in their product portfolio in the DACH region, meaning that our products have become directly available to practically every segment of the German, Austrian and Swiss markets. The sudden increase in the popularity of the BalaBit products drew the already growing attention of the potential partners, and this tendency has continued even during the last months. Of course, this process is not accidental since regulations – such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act or Basel II acts – that apply to organizations that handle financial and other sensitive data include specifications for which the Shell Control Box and the syslog-ng product family offer a unique solution.
The attention of our new partners has also been drawn by our unique technology, and the result is our cooperation and other, already ongoing, projects. All the three companies have good reputation in the German market, also proven by their reliable products and extensive customer list. Controlware GmbH, Germany's largest system integrator, gets our products distributed through its more than one hundred resellers in the country for its clients working in the public administration, whereas dacoma GmbH is a distributor specialized in the bank and healthcare fields. Head Technology, an internationally recognized IT-security technology provider, has agencies in nine Eastern and Northern European countries outside the DACH region.
This year's significant growth of our global partnership network already influences the sales at the end of this year. According to the estimations, nearly 50 percent of the annual sales turnover of BalaBit comes from abroad, and this rate will probably continue to increase next year.

SECURITY 2008 Essen

One of the biggest security exhibitions opened its gates in Essen, Germany on Tuesday.
The Security 2008 exhibition, which is probably the main forum of the security field is held this week, 7-10 October. The quality of the fair is guaranteed by the 1100 exhibitors arriving from 42 countries around the world, and the extremely diverse program, that encompasses every field of security, ranging from crime prevention to fire protection. Almost every product available on the market today will be on display during these four days, as well as new, innovative solutions that will become highly important in the coming years.
Naturally, the exhibition would not be complete without the IT Security area that acquires greater and greater significance every year. This is also highlighted by the fact that the IT Security area is located in a separate hall, where visitors can obtain information about the current state of network security, antivirus and logging technologies, and also participate in live demos and presentations.
As a major player in the field of IT Security technologies, BalaBit IT Security also exhibits together with the German Netfox AG, who specializes in business critical IT solutions. Visit us in Halle 6, Stand 406 and learn about the capabilities of our unique Shell Control Box.
